La Romana International (LRM) is the closest airport to Bayahibe and the simplest arrival when its schedule works.

Punta Cana (PUJ) is the one most travelers can actually book, and it is one direct private drive down the coast. Santo Domingo (SDQ) is served from the west.

Bayahibe and Playa Dominicus read as one destination from an airport, and as two rather different places once you are staying in them. Bayahibe is a fishing village with a dock, dive shops and a seafront that is not a resort strip. Dominicus, a few minutes further on, is the strip: gated properties in a row along one long beach.

Two resorts share the Dreams brand here. Two share the Viva name. One trades under a brand it did not carry three years ago, another under a name most guidebooks still print, and one complex holds two receptions, one of them adults-only.

This is the question we are asked most about this coast, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a scare story. App-based cars operate in the Punta Cana and Santo Domingo areas, and coverage thins out fast the further you get from a city. Bayahibe and Dominicus are at the thin end.

The practical failure is not the arrival, it is the return. A car that is willing to drive an hour out to Dominicus is not necessarily findable at seven in the morning when you need to be at the terminal for a fixed departure, and a resort on a private access road is not a street corner an app driver can loiter on. Guests who arrive by app and plan to leave by app are the ones who end up negotiating at reception the night before.

Airport pickup rules are also set by each airport and change without notice, which makes any promise we made here stale within a season. So we do not make one: we say that a pre-booked private car is the arrangement that behaves the same way in both directions, and leave the comparison to you.

This coast faces south and sits behind Saona and Catalina, which is why it reads calmer than the east-facing beaches around Punta Cana and why the dive operators are here. For the week itself, Bayahibe village is the departure point for Saona and Catalina, La Romana and Altos de Chavón are a straightforward outing, and Santo Domingo’s colonial city is a long but genuine day trip. All of them can be booked as an hourly or full-day charter with the same vehicle standard as your airport run, collected from your reception, and quoted as its own trip rather than bolted onto the transfer.
