Las Américas is the country's principal long-haul gateway and it carries a schedule Punta Cana does not: more capital-city business routes, more Latin American connections, more of the year-round flying that is not built around resort weeks. When your dates fall outside the charter season, or your route home passes through Bogotá, Panama City or Madrid rather than a European holiday hub, the capital is often the only airport with a fare that exists at all.

The second reason is calendar shape. Charter flights into Punta Cana tend to operate on fixed weekly rotations, which is fine for a seven-night stay and awkward for ten or five. SDQ's mix of scheduled carriers means most days of the week are flyable, so a stay that does not divide neatly into a rotation can still be booked without paying for nights you do not want.

The third is the return. Late departures out of the capital are common, which turns your last day into an actual day rather than a 6am scramble. That is worth naming here, because the airport you arrive at is usually the airport you leave from, and half the value of an SDQ itinerary shows up at the end of the trip.

Long-haul flights into SDQ concentrate in the afternoon and early evening. Add immigration, a bag belt and the walk out, and a great many Dominicus arrivals begin their drive after dark — which is fine on a lit toll road with a chauffeur who has done it before, and less fine if you were expecting to swim before dinner.

The practical planning move is to decide in advance what your first evening is for. If it is dinner at the resort, tell the front desk your realistic arrival window rather than your landing time, because a late seating and a late arrival are easy to reconcile in advance and awkward to fix from a car. If your first evening is simply sleep, then the late drive costs you nothing at all.

If a direct flight into Punta Cana exists on your dates at a comparable fare, take it. The drive from PUJ to this coast is materially shorter, and no amount of toll-road efficiency makes a longer road shorter. The case for SDQ is a fare case, a schedule case, or an itinerary case — a stopover in the capital, a domestic onward leg, a one-way in and out of different airports.
