Punta Cana hurricane season: the short answer

For travelers booked between August and November, the useful questions are more specific: where official alerts apply, whether flights or hotels can be changed, and what happens to an airport pickup if an arrival moves.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Atlantic activity peaks around September 10, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October. Most days in Punta Cana are still ordinary tropical-weather days, not storm days. Check NOAA NHC, INDOMET and COE for warnings. If your flight moves but keeps the same airline and flight number, your Transekur pickup moves with it. [1][28]

When is hurricane season in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic?

The official Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1 and ends on November 30. The statistical peak is around September 10, and most Atlantic tropical-cyclone activity occurs between mid-August and mid-October. Those dates describe the whole Atlantic basin—the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf—not Punta Cana or the Dominican Republic alone. [1]

Using the 1991–2020 climate period, an average Atlantic season produces 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes. “Major” means Category 3, 4 or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Again, those are basin-wide averages. They do not mean that those systems will approach the Dominican Republic. [1]

The peak date is not a forecast for an individual vacation. A trip that includes September 10 is not automatically stormier than one a week earlier or later. Similarly, being inside the official season does not mean a tropical cyclone is present.

For month-by-month planning, use the Punta Cana weather by month hub. The separate guides for June and July show how the season begins before the busier part of Atlantic climatology.

What August, September, October and November actually look like in Punta Cana

Transekur’s Punta Cana climate figures are 1995–2024 averages, not forecasts. They record monthly rainfall and the number of wet days. A wet-day total shows that rain occurred; it does not say whether that rain lasted briefly or continued for hours. [2]–[8]

| Month | Average Punta Cana rainfall | Average wet days | |---|---:|---:| | August | 112 mm | 20 | | September | 108 mm | 23 | | October | About 123 mm | About 23 | | November | 102 mm | 20 |

August averages 112 mm of rain over 20 wet days. It falls within hurricane season, but that calendar fact does not describe the weather on a specific day. [4]

Punta Cana weather in September averages 108 mm over 23 wet days. September is close to the Atlantic climatological peak, but the long-term Punta Cana rainfall total is slightly lower than August’s. [5]

Punta Cana in October averages about 123 mm over about 23 wet days, making October the wettest Punta Cana month in this 1995–2024 series. So the answer to “is October hurricane season in Punta Cana?” is yes—but a seasonal calendar and a personal trip forecast are different things. [6]

Punta Cana weather in November averages 102 mm over 20 wet days. November remains inside the official season through the final day of the month. December then drops to 57 mm over 14 wet days. [7][8]

For context, June averages 81 mm over 20 wet days and July averages 108 mm over 21. The progression is therefore not a simple, steady increase from June to November. [2][3]

Hurricanes in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic: a timeline

This is a selected timeline of significant landfalls and damaging impacts, not a list of every tropical system that has produced rain or waves in the country. Older death and damage estimates sometimes conflict because agencies used different methods.

| Date and system | Status in or near the DR | Dominican Republic impact | |---|---|---| | Sep. 3, 1930 — San Zenón | Category 4 landfall at Santo Domingo | Capital devastated; estimated 2,000–8,000 deaths and US$15–50 million damage. [9][10] | | Aug. 31, 1979 — David | Category 5 landfall on the south-central coast | Countrywide destruction. David and Frederic together caused about 1,400 deaths and more than US$830 million damage. [11] | | Sep. 6, 1979 — Frederic | Tropical Storm landfall southwest of Santo Domingo | Heavy rain compounded David’s damage; figures were assessed jointly. [11] | | Sep. 22, 1998 — Georges | Category 3 landfall in southeast DR, about 75 nautical miles east of Santo Domingo | The east of the country took the landfall; the worst losses came from flash floods and mudslides in the mountains. Sources report 235–380 deaths and more than US$1 billion to about US$2.19 billion in damage. [12]–[14] | | Sep. 16, 2004 — Jeanne | Category 1 landfall in eastern DR | La Altagracia and northeastern provinces were affected; 18 deaths are reported in NOAA’s historical summary. [15][16] | | Oct. 28–30, 2007 — Noel | Tropical Storm; center crossed Haiti, with major rain in the DR | Severe flooding and mudslides; 87 deaths and about US$80 million damage reported. [17] | | Sep. 7, 2017 — Irma | Category 5 north of the country; no DR landfall | Minor DR damage compared with nearby islands; no DR deaths reported by NHC. [18] | | Sep. 21, 2017 — Maria | Category 3 near the northeast coast; no DR landfall | Flooding and mudslides caused five deaths. [19] | | Sep. 19, 2022 — Fiona | Category 1 landfall near Boca de Yuma | Direct hit in La Altagracia; two deaths, flooding and widespread utility disruption. [20] | | Aug. 23, 2023 — Franklin | Tropical Storm landfall south of Barahona | Flooding and landslides; AP initially reported at least one death and two missing. [21][22] | | Nov. 17–19, 2023 — Potential Tropical Cyclone 22 | Did not become a named storm | Rainfall contributed to 21 deaths, more than 2,600 damaged homes and 17 destroyed homes. Higüey in La Altagracia was affected. [23] | | Jul. 2, 2024 — Beryl | Major hurricane passing south of the DR; no landfall | Coastal flooding, rough seas and power disruption; no national DR monetary total in the NHC report. [24] | | Oct. 22–28, 2025 — Melissa | Tropical Storm during its DR rain impacts; later Category 5 elsewhere | One DR death was reported, and nearly 200 homes were damaged. [25][26] | | Aug. 31, 2026 — remnants of Dolly | No tropical-cyclone landfall in the DR | About 100 homes flooded in San Pedro de Macorís and 12 in Los Alcarrizos; no deaths or injuries reported. [27] |

San Zenón remains the defining early event in Dominican hurricane history. It struck Santo Domingo as a Category 4 hurricane in 1930 and killed thousands. Its historical death and damage ranges are broad because records from the period were incomplete. [9][10]

David and Frederic arrived six days apart in 1979. David brought extreme wind, while Frederic added destructive rainfall before recovery had begun. The authoritative USAID assessment treated the human and economic toll as a combined disaster rather than assigning every loss to one storm. [11]

Georges crossed the country as a major hurricane in 1998. Fiona’s 2022 landfall was much weaker—Category 1—but historically important for Punta Cana travelers because it entered La Altagracia near Boca de Yuma, south-southwest of Punta Cana. The NHC recorded 11.11 inches of storm-total rain at Punta Cana International Airport and documented flooding in La Altagracia, El Seibo, Hato Mayor and Samaná. [12][20]

When was the last major hurricane to hit the Dominican Republic?

The last major hurricane to make direct landfall in the Dominican Republic was Hurricane Georges on September 22, 1998. It made landfall in southeast Dominican Republic as a Category 3 hurricane. [12]

NOAA’s report places the landfall about 75 nautical miles east of Santo Domingo, in the southeast of the country, rather than naming Punta Cana as the entry point.

However, Georges was not the last hurricane to hit the area. Hurricane Fiona made landfall near Boca de Yuma in La Altagracia on September 19, 2022, as a Category 1 hurricane with estimated winds of 80 knots. The landfall point was south-southwest of Punta Cana. Fiona caused two direct deaths in the country, including one in Higüey. [20]

Reliable sources document flooding, utility disruption and rainfall at PUJ, but we did not find an authoritative, timestamped source establishing exactly when Punta Cana International Airport closed and reopened. This article therefore does not quote a closure duration.

These are historical statements, not risk predictions. Past seasons do not predict future ones.

Should you travel to Punta Cana during hurricane season?

Hurricane season alone cannot decide whether a trip is right for you. Your flexibility, booking conditions and tolerance for a possible itinerary change matter more than the month’s label.

During the week before departure:

  • Check NHC, INDOMET and COE rather than relying on social-media screenshots.
  • Read your airline’s delay, cancellation and rebooking rules.
  • Check the hotel’s change and cancellation terms.
  • If considering travel insurance, treat it as your own choice and read the named-storm exclusions, coverage limits and purchase deadlines before buying.
  • Keep airline, accommodation and transfer contact details available offline.

Routine arrival planning still matters. Complete the Dominican Republic eTicket and review what to expect from immigration lines at Punta Cana Airport. The broader Punta Cana guide covers destination planning that is unrelated to storms.

If a storm changes your flight: what happens to your airport transfer?

For a pre-booked Punta Cana Airport Transfer (PUJ), the flight number is the important operational detail:

As long as you stay on the same airline and flight number, there is nothing to do: we monitor the flight and move the pickup with it, whether it lands late, early or is diverted. Waiting is free for up to 2 hours after landing on every airport pickup, and night arrivals follow the same procedure — we operate around the clock. If the airline rebooks you onto a different flight, or you change airline, send the new flight number in writing through the chat on this website or by email, or call us, before your chauffeur leaves. [28]

A diversion does not automatically promise a pickup at another airport. If a PUJ flight lands elsewhere and does not continue to Punta Cana under the same flight number, contact Transekur with the new arrival details before the chauffeur leaves. The Dominican Republic airports guide explains the country’s airport codes and locations.

Punta Cana airport (PUJ)’s new landing system

On October 2, 2026, Punta Cana Post reported that the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation’s modernization plan includes a new ILS-DME instrument landing system for Punta Cana International Airport. The stated investment is RD$150 million, with the aim of making approaches more precise and reducing possible diversions during adverse weather. No completion date has been announced, so travelers should not assume that the system is already operational. [29]

Where to get official storm warnings

Use three official sources:

  • NOAA National Hurricane Center: Atlantic tropical-cyclone tracks, discussions, watches and warnings.
  • INDOMET: Dominican national weather information.
  • COE: province-level emergency alerts and public instructions.

Alerts can apply to one part of the country without including Punta Cana. For example, on October 8, 2026, the COE placed eight jurisdictions in the capital region and southwest under yellow or green alerts for heavy rain. La Altagracia was not included. That is an illustration of how geographically specific Dominican alerts can be, not a prediction for another date. [30]

Always read the province list. Punta Cana is in La Altagracia.

Hurricane season versus sargassum: a separate question

Hurricane activity and beach seaweed are different issues. Use the sargassum planner for seasonal planning and Punta Cana seaweed right now for current conditions.

For the lower-seaweed winter period, see the guide to sargassum in Punta Cana in December, January and February.

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. The Atlantic climatological peak is around September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. These are Atlantic-basin dates, not a prediction for the Dominican Republic or an individual trip.
When is hurricane season in Punta Cana?
Punta Cana follows the Atlantic season: June 1 through November 30. Being inside the season does not mean a tropical cyclone will affect Punta Cana during your stay. Check NHC, INDOMET and COE close to departure.
Is October hurricane season in Punta Cana?
Yes. October is inside the official season. Punta Cana weather in October averages about 123 mm of rain over about 23 wet days in Transekur’s 1995–2024 climate series, making it the wettest Punta Cana month in that dataset.
What was the last hurricane to hit Punta Cana?
The most recent hurricane to make landfall in the Punta Cana region was Fiona on September 19, 2022. It entered near Boca de Yuma in La Altagracia as a Category 1 hurricane, south-southwest of Punta Cana.
What was the last hurricane to hit the Dominican Republic?
The most recent hurricane landfall in the Dominican Republic was Fiona in 2022. Tropical Storm Franklin later made landfall near Barahona in August 2023, but it was not a hurricane at Dominican landfall.
When was the last major hurricane in the Dominican Republic?
Hurricane Georges was the last major hurricane to make direct landfall in the Dominican Republic. It struck southeast Dominican Republic as a Category 3 hurricane on September 22, 1998.
Has a hurricane ever hit Punta Cana?
Yes. Fiona made landfall in La Altagracia in 2022 as a Category 1 hurricane. Georges directly affected the eastern region as a Category 3 hurricane in 1998. Historical events do not predict what will happen in a future season.
What happens to my airport pickup if my flight is delayed or diverted?
If you remain on the same airline and flight number, Transekur monitors the flight and moves the pickup with it. Waiting is free for up to two hours after landing. If your airline or flight number changes, send the new flight number in writing or call before the chauffeur leaves. A diversion does not automatically promise pickup at a different airport.
