What does the road plan consist of?

How Punta Cana would connect to Montecristi

The projected route would link the Eastern tourism corridor with Santo Domingo, continuing along the Duarte Highway toward the Cibao and the Northwest Line. The objective is to avoid urban intersections that disrupt interregional traffic.

The Minister of Public Works and Communications, Eduardo Estrella, explained that these measures would allow drivers to leave Santo Domingo heading north without traffic lights. Combined with other bypasses, they would make it possible to travel between Montecristi and Punta Cana under the same model. As ground transportation operators, we distinguish between this future vision and the actual conditions available on each trip.

The connection from Punta Cana and La Altagracia

In La Otra Banda, La Altagracia province, a bypass is being built to prevent traffic from crossing urban bottlenecks. The intervention also seeks to streamline daily travel between Higüey, Bávaro, and Punta Cana, which is heavily used by residents, workers, and visitors.

This project builds upon a road network transformation carried out over the past 25 years. Eastern thoroughfares, including Las Américas Highway and the Autovía del Coral, have linked the corridor connecting Santo Domingo, Boca Chica, Juan Dolio, La Romana, Bayahibe, and Punta Cana. Subsequent extensions toward Uvero Alto and Miches broaden mobility options across the region. For passengers using PUJ and LRM, a better-integrated network can make transfer planning more predictable.

Crossing Greater Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo serves as the central hub, receiving routes from the East and connecting them to the Duarte Highway toward the North. Highlighted interventions include Plaza de la Bandera, Pintura, and the Charles de Gaulle–La Victoria intersection.

These works form part of the commitments financed through the renegotiation of the Aerodom concession, according to official information. Their purpose is to separate vehicle movements that currently conflict at grade, allowing long-distance traffic to move with fewer interruptions. This is also significant for our transfers to and from Las Américas International Airport (SDQ), particularly when the itinerary continues beyond the capital.

The route toward the Cibao and Montecristi

Beyond Santo Domingo, the corridor continues along the Duarte Highway, the primary overland link between the capital and the Cibao. The announced improvements focus on the entrance to Greater Santo Domingo and on sections heading toward Santiago and Loma Miranda.

From Santiago, existing connections allow travel to continue toward the Northwest Line and Montecristi. To achieve the stated goal, works along the Duarte Highway must integrate with bypasses and grade-separated solutions at other key points. Cibao International Airport (STI) also forms part of this regional mobility axis.

Planned works on the Duarte Highway

Planning places particular emphasis on access points along the Duarte Highway. The minister stated that three overpasses are planned at Kilometers 28, 22, and 17. According to official reports, the Kilometer 28 overpass has been awarded and property acquisitions have begun; the Kilometer 22 overpass was in the award process, and the Kilometer 17 project was put out to tender through RD Vial.

These administrative statuses do not mean the structures are open to traffic. Travelers should bear in mind that schedules and driving conditions may vary as construction progresses.

Road expansions, bridges, and new U-turns

Authorities are also prioritizing the stretch toward Villa Altagracia and the section between the Santiago airport and Loma Miranda. Announced measures include widening bridges to six lanes, closing open median cuts, and building structured U-turns.

The structured U-turns aim to replace hazardous at-grade crossings, including the access point to Santo Cerro mentioned by the minister. By preventing vehicles from cutting directly across fast-moving lanes, these solutions can reduce conflict points and improve flow. They do not eliminate all risks, which is why our chauffeurs maintain defensive driving habits and verify conditions prior to every intercity trip.

During construction, detours, partial closures, or adjustments to travel times may occur. This is why we do not base an airport pickup solely on an estimated time from a navigation app.

The role of the Autopista del Ámbar

The Autopista del Ámbar is part of the long-term vision connecting Puerto Plata, the Cibao, and other national corridors. Estrella noted that, once completed and integrated with the remaining works, traveling from Puerto Plata to Pedernales without traffic lights would also become feasible.

The project is highly relevant for transfers involving Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP). However, the outlined journey depends on the completion of the highway, bypasses, and corresponding overpasses. It should not be viewed as an itinerary that is fully operational today.

What traveling without traffic lights actually means

“Without traffic lights” means eliminating mandatory stops at signalized intersections along the main corridor. It does not mean a vehicle will travel continuously without stopping or that the journey will always take the exact same amount of time.

Traffic volume, weather, roadworks, checkpoints, incidents, and necessary rest breaks can affect any long-distance trip. Punta Cana and Montecristi are situated at opposite ends of the country, meaning the journey will still require careful planning even if traffic flows more smoothly.

We advise viewing the announcement as an evolving infrastructure vision. Prior to confirming schedules, we review the available route and incorporate sufficient buffer for real-world road conditions.

Planning an interregional transfer

For an interregional trip, we coordinate pickup times based on flight schedules, the exact departure point, luggage, and anticipated road conditions. We also factor in reasonable breaks and extra time when the final destination is an airport.

Passengers using PUJ, SDQ, STI, POP, LRM, or AZS should confirm which terminal corresponds to their itinerary before booking transportation. Roadway improvements do not eliminate the physical distance between airports located in different regions.

The network's evolution also includes the corridor from Santo Domingo toward Samaná and Las Terrenas, with connections toward Nagua and Cabrera. In the south, bypasses and highways connecting Santo Domingo with Peravia, Azua, Barahona, and Pedernales help streamline routes that previously required driving through multiple urban centers. This experience demonstrates that infrastructure can make journeys more efficient, yet every service must still be calculated according to its specific route.

Expected impact for travelers and communities

Bypasses can divert through-traffic away from urban centers. In La Altagracia, the project aims to ease congestion between Higüey, Bávaro, and Punta Cana. In Santo Domingo, grade separations are designed to divide local traffic from vehicles heading to other regions. Along the Duarte Highway, U-turns and lane expansions seek to organize access points and turns.

Over recent decades, we have seen how a better-connected road network transforms transfer logistics. The Autovía del Coral enhanced continuity along the eastern corridor; the route to Samaná facilitated access to the northeast; and southern bypasses allow travelers to reach Azua, Barahona, and Pedernales while bypassing urban traffic.

For our passengers, this progress allows for more precise scheduling between airports, hotels, and cities. It can also reduce hazardous maneuvers, though safety remains dependent on road quality, vehicle condition, weather, and responsible driving. The full benefit of the Punta Cana-Montecristi corridor will depend on all projects being completed and operating as an integrated network.

Our guidance for upcoming travel

We will monitor official updates regarding La Otra Banda, the Santo Domingo access corridors, the Duarte Highway, and the Autopista del Ámbar. As works progress, our chauffeurs select routes based on origin, destination, and conditions observed on the day of service.

If a transfer coincides with roadworks, we recommend keeping the contact number provided in the reservation active and notifying us of any flight or meeting point changes. For airport arrivals, our team coordinates pickups using flight tracking data. For departures, we schedule an appropriate buffer based on travel distance and the corridor taken.

Booking ground transportation in advance enables us to evaluate connections, potential detours, and group requirements. The Punta Cana-Montecristi proposal represents a national mobility vision, but each journey must be planned according to actual road conditions.
