The short answer: how do you get to Bahía de las Águilas?

For most international visitors today, Santo Domingo Las Américas Airport (SDQ) is the practical gateway. Arrange the road transfer to your confirmed Pedernales lodging or access point before flying, then confirm the beach's final leg separately.

There are three parts to the trip:

• Fly into the Dominican Republic. SDQ is the practical starting point for the southwest. Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) can also be used when its flight schedule is better, but it starts much farther east.
• Travel by road to Barahona, Pedernales or a confirmed Cabo Rojo-area address. This is a long-distance private journey, not a hotel-zone airport hop.
• Confirm the final beach access. Bahía de las Águilas is inside a protected national-park landscape. The correct final arrangement depends on the access point, conditions and the service you have booked. Do not assume an airport transfer automatically includes a boat, off-road leg, admission or excursion.

PUJ can still be the right choice when a direct flight is materially better, or when the party already plans to spend time in Punta Cana. It should not be selected simply because its airport name is familiar.

What the planned Oviedo airport could change

The runway was reported for completion by 30 October 2026, while airport operations were targeted for February 2027. Supporting works, airfield technology and actual airline schedules were still outstanding when the update was published.

On 18 September 2026, Arecoa reported statements by Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza about the Cabo Rojo programme:

• the runway was due to be finished by 30 October;
• complementary works and airfield technology remained to be completed;
• the government expected Oviedo airport operations to begin in February 2027;
• the airport was expected to create more than 500 direct jobs, with roughly 300 additional government posts;
• a new road linking Enriquillo and Pedernales was at an advanced construction stage;
• the first 500-room hotel was expected to open in February, with two more hotels under construction;
• more than 2,400 property titles were being prepared for Pedernales residents.

These are dated development statements, not a flight timetable. Until an aviation authority, airport operator or airline publishes operating details, travelers should not book an itinerary on the assumption that they can fly directly to Oviedo.
