What is actually going on
Ground transportation around Punta Cana is organised by local unions, which run the taxi service and public transport in the area. Rideshare platforms have never been able to establish themselves properly at Punta Cana airport as a result.
The friction is not theoretical. There have been repeated incidents of union or taxi drivers confronting passengers using rideshare between hotels and the airport. It is not a situation you want to walk into at the end of a flight, with luggage and a family in tow.
Where rideshare does work
Apps function normally in Santo Domingo, Santiago and most of the country's larger cities. If you are staying in the capital, a rideshare is a reasonable way to move around town — although for airport runs with luggage a pre-booked car is still simpler.
The better option for Punta Cana
Arrange a licensed private transfer before you fly. Two things to check on whoever you book:
- Licensing and insurance. A legitimate operator holds a transport licence and full liability insurance. Anybody can put up a website.
- Own fleet, own drivers. Operators who own their vehicles and employ their drivers are accountable for both. Brokers who resell someone else's car are not.
Your resort's concierge is also a reasonable source of recommendations, precisely because hotels vet the companies they let onto the property.
