Do You Need a Passport for the Dominican Republic?

Passport

A valid passport is required for every traveller, children included. The US State Department's Dominican Republic page states the rule plainly: your passport must be valid for a period of 6 months starting with your arrival in the country. That guidance is written for US citizens; other governments publish their own pages, so if you travel on another passport, check your own foreign-office advice as well as the Dominican rules.

Check the expiry date before you book, not at the airport. Airlines apply the destination's rule at check-in, so a passport that runs out within six months of your arrival date can stop the trip before it starts. Make sure the name and passport number match your tickets and your eTicket exactly; a mismatch is the kind of detail that gets queried at the desk.

Visa

Most tourists are eligible for visa-free entry for stays of up to 30 days. That generally includes citizens of countries who can legally enter the United States, Canada, the European Union or the United Kingdom, along with a number of other nationalities.

If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, or your nationality is not covered, arrange a visa through your nearest Dominican Republic embassy before departure. Visa applications usually require a passport valid for at least six months, and appointments can take time to schedule.

The eTicket

The Dominican Republic replaced the old paper immigration and customs forms with an online eTicket, completed at eticket.migracion.gob.do. Fill it in before you travel; you will be asked for the resulting QR code on arrival and again on departure. The State Department puts it the same way: travellers must complete an eTicket for each entry and each exit, so a side trip to another island means a new form each way.

Tourist card

Visitors no longer buy a separate tourist card. It is included in the airline fare — the State Department lists the tourist card fee as included in airline charges — so there is nothing to pay at the airport on a normal arrival by air.

If you arrive by cruise ship

Cruise passengers follow a different routine, and the State Department spells out two points. A tourist card is required if you stay on land for more than 24 hours. And disembarked cruise passengers who do not hold a passport valid for 6 months must pay a daily migration escort service fee for the time they are ashore — the State Department quotes an approximate daily amount and notes it is subject to change. A passport valid for six months avoids both questions.

What immigration is checking right now

Two official notes from late September 2026 explain why the document checks feel thorough. The Dirección General de Migración (DGM) reported that in the week of 18–24 September it detected 40 travellers with active court orders or migration alerts, and 12 cases of forged or altered passports, visas, residence permits or entry stamps, at the country's airports.

On 28 September, President Luis Abinader said the country is refusing entry to about 20 foreigners a week who have criminal records in their home countries, and that the checks apply equally to citizens of countries that need no visa. For an ordinary visitor the practical consequence is simple: carry the genuine documents listed above, make sure the names match across passport, ticket and eTicket, and allow time at arrivals.

Overstaying

The country charges a fine on departure for overstaying your permitted period, and the amount rises with the length of the overstay. If you are unsure whether your plans fit inside the visa-free window, check with the embassy before you travel rather than at the airport.
