Start with the honest baseline: Punta Cana International sits far nearer to Cap Cana than Santo Domingo does, and for most travellers on typical resort-week dates, a direct PUJ flight is simply the better arrival. Nothing below changes that fact, and we're not going to argue you out of the shorter road if it's available to you.

What does tip the decision toward SDQ is fare and route breadth. Santo Domingo carries scheduled long-haul and regional service that Punta Cana's charter-heavy calendar doesn't match, so travellers connecting through certain hubs, booking a one-way, or flying dates that fall outside the resort-season rotations sometimes find a workable fare only exists into the capital.

The other trigger is a multi-city or stopover itinerary — a few days elsewhere in the country, a connection through Santo Domingo on the way to or from a different destination, or a domestic leg that only touches SDQ. In those cases the airport was chosen by the itinerary, and Cap Cana becomes the add-on rather than the anchor.

A business-then-beach pattern falls into the same category: a stop in the capital for meetings before the trip turns into a holiday. For that traveller, SDQ isn't really being weighed against Punta Cana at all — it's simply where the working part of the trip ends and the resort part begins, with the transfer providing the hinge between the two.

From the capital, the route runs the Autovía del Este east before joining the Coral highway and the Boulevard Turístico del Este for the final approach into Cap Cana — the same purpose-built road network that channels traffic into the development regardless of which airport a guest started from. It's a different final stretch from the resorts further up the coast, built specifically to serve Cap Cana's own properties and marina.

That final section is short relative to the whole drive but distinct in character: a planned boulevard rather than a highway shoulder, leading directly to Cap Cana's own entrance rather than a public beach road. Guests who've done the SDQ-to-Bayahibe or SDQ-to-La-Romana runs before will notice the road changes once it turns off toward Cap Cana specifically.

None of that shortens the overall trip, but it does mean the last few minutes feel purposeful rather than improvised — you're not hunting for a resort entrance off a shared coastal road, you're following a route built to end at the development's own gate.

The decision comes down to three questions worth answering before you book a flight: does a materially better fare exist into SDQ, does your itinerary already touch the capital for another reason, and does your stay length absorb the extra road time comfortably? If the answer to any one of those is a clear yes, SDQ is a reasonable choice for Cap Cana.

If none of them apply — you're flying a straightforward round trip on resort-season dates with no other reason to touch Santo Domingo — take the direct Punta Cana flight and use that arrival page instead. It's the simpler answer for the simpler trip.

Either way, book the ground transfer once you know the airport rather than guessing at the road ahead of the flight — the gate arrival and the vehicle sizing are specific enough to this resort that a generic quote won't capture them.
