The national aviation map: eight strategic entry points

Travel to the Dominican Republic starts with a choice most itineraries make by accident. Eight international gateways are spread across the country, and each one sits at the head of a different road network, so the airport you land at decides how long the last part of the journey takes and what kind of driving it involves.

Four of the eight are the major commercial hubs: Punta Cana (PUJ), Las Américas in Santo Domingo (SDQ), Cibao in Santiago (STI) and Gregorio Luperón in Puerto Plata (POP). The other four are specialised: La Romana (LRM), Samaná El Catey (AZS), La Isabela in northern Santo Domingo (JBQ) and María Montez in Barahona (BRX). The toll corridors that link them are maintained under the national road programme, which is why the practical comparison is a route-network question rather than a distance question.

Major commercial gateways: PUJ, SDQ, STI and POP

PUJ carries the widest selection of non-stop flights from North America and Europe and heads the eastern resort corridor — Cap Cana, Bávaro, Uvero Alto, Macao and Miches. SDQ serves the capital, the Colonial Zone and the southern coastline, and its northeastern toll corridor is the standard road entry to the Samaná peninsula.

STI, inland at Santiago, holds year-round international service and is the working gateway for the Cibao valley, Jarabacoa and the central mountains, as well as an alternative approach to the north coast. POP is the north coast's own airport, feeding Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete directly.

Specialised and private aviation gateways: LRM, AZS, JBQ and BRX

LRM sits beside Casa de Campo and serves Bayahíbe and the southeast; its low volume makes for one of the quietest arrivals in the country. AZS is the northeast peninsula's gateway and the shortest road entry to Las Terrenas when a flight exists on your dates.

JBQ, in northern Santo Domingo, is the capital's executive aviation hub, handling charter traffic through dedicated general-aviation facilities. BRX at Barahona opens the southwest.
